Our Enviro Vision: For our whole school community to understand their impact on the planet while engaging meaningfully with the environment and to feel empowered to take action to live more sustainably. 

We regularly update our school enviro blog to share what we have been up to. Please click HERE to view it. 

We are committed to teaching students the importance of living sustainably and looking after our environment. We want to empower them to lead change. We believe this can be integrated into all areas of school and home learning. 

2024 Projects: 

* native tree planting

* improving our school landscapes – flower beds, more edible gardens and animal habitats  

* Garden to Table sessions for ALL classes 

We are strong advocates of waste minimisation.   We are committed to reducing waste To do this we:

  • Promote ‘Wrapper Free Lunches’ (and ask that any food wrappers go home)

  • Sell beeswax wraps and jar mixes as alternatives to wrapped snacks 

  • Collect and recycle / compost coffee capsules

  • Compost our food scraps 

  • Set up our “Waste Wizard” station at school events to collect and visibly sort rubbish so we can compost or recycle it rather than send it all to landfill. 

 

Kaitiakitanga: The prefix ‘kai’ which the verb ‘tiaki’ denotes the agent of action of ‘taki’. Therefore, a kaitiaki is a guardian, keeper, preserver, conservator or protector. The addition of ‘tanga’ denotes preservation, conservation and protection.

Worm farm 

We have a self-made worm farm into which we put all our food scraps. This decomposes the food and creates soil in our gardens to grow our fresh produce.

Our own school water collection system

When it rains we collect the rainwater into our water tank. We use the water for gardening, especially to water our yummy produce.

Wrapper Free Lunches 

At Howick Primary School we encourage students to their families to think twice about buying food wrapped in plastic. Our school initiative of “wrapper-free” lunches aligns with what we do as a school to reduce, reuse and recycle. 

Garden to Table
All our year 5 / 6 students are involved in this programme throughout the year. During the sessions the students work in the garden planting, harvesting, composting and watering plants or in the kitchen cooking different dishes. Students are rostered on to different activities each week. At the end of each session students sit together to enjoy the delicious kai they have made using garden produce they have helped to grow. 
Adopt a Park
All year 3 / 4 students are offered the opportunity to join this environmental group. Each term they visit a local park that we have ‘adopted’. They learn about the native trees and animals that live there and take environmental action such as litter pick-ups and tree planting. 
Trees for Survival 
All year 5 / 6 students are offered the opportunity to join this environmental group. 

During the year they have 2 main important jobs; 
1) they plant 800+ native trees on a local farm 
2) they put 800+ small tree seedlings into grow bags to grow and nurture ready for the following planting season. 
As we have a native bush area on site many are also involved in tree planting, weeding and care for this area too.
