Welcome to Howick Primary School. Our Uniform Shop’s Opening Day is Changing to a Monday. 8:30am – 9:30am and 2:30pm – 3:30pm
At Howick Primary School, our mathematics programme is designed to move students beyond rote memorisation toward a deep, conceptual understanding of numbers. We believe that every child can be a successful mathematician when provided with the right tools, a structured pathway, and teaching that meets them exactly where they are.
We use world-class, research-based programmes that ensure a smooth transition of skills as students progress through the school.
In our junior school, our expert teachers utilise PR1ME Mathematics, a programme based on the high-performing pedagogical practices of Singapore, Republic of Korea, and Hong Kong.
Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA): Students start with physical objects (concrete), move to visual representations (pictorial), and finally to abstract symbols and equations.
Problem Solving: From day one, students are taught to think mathematically and apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.
As students move into the senior school, we transition to the Oxford Maths programme. This curriculum offers a comprehensive approach that focuses on:
Skill Mastery: Building a solid foundation in the five strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics, and Probability.
Inquiry-Based Learning: Encouraging students to explore “the why” behind mathematical processes.
Digital Integration: Utilising modern tools to practise and apply mathematical concepts in a 21st-century context.
Just as in our Literacy programme, we very much believe in differentiating teaching and learning to meet the individual needs of the students. Our teachers are experts at differentiated instruction, meaning they adapt their lessons to provide:
Support for those who need more time or a different explanation to grasp a concept.
Extension for those ready to dive deeper into complex problem-solving and mathematical theory.
To ensure every learner succeeds, we integrate specialised programmes that provide extra scaffolding or a faster pace when needed.
Numicon: We support learners to build their concepts through the Numicon programme. This multi-sensory approach uses structured imagery and physical shapes to help students “see” how numbers work and relate to one another.
Accelerating Mathematics (Years 4–6): For our senior students, we offer an Accelerating Maths programme. This is designed for learners who have the potential to move at a faster pace or those who need a targeted “boost” to reach their full potential in the senior curriculum.
