At Howick Primary School, we recognise that the world is rapidly changing. Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programme is designed to equip students with the “future-focused” skills they need to navigate and lead in this evolving landscape.
STEM is not just a subject at our school; it is a core part of our curriculum release programme. This ensures that every student receives regular, high-quality instruction from specialist teachers in a dedicated environment, allowing for deep exploration and hands-on learning.
We believe that the “E” and “T” in STEM are where imagination meets reality. At Howick Primary, we don’t just follow instructions; we encourage our students to be creative problem-solvers and bold innovators.
Our programme is built around the Design Thinking process:
Empathise & Define: Identifying real-world problems that need solving.
Ideate: Brainstorming creative solutions without limits.
Prototype: Using a variety of materials—from cardboard and glue to 3D printers and robotics—to bring ideas to life.
Test & Refine: Learning that “failure” is simply a first draft and using feedback to improve designs.
Our curriculum release programme ensures students rotate through diverse modules that build a broad toolkit of skills:
Robotics & Coding: Students learn to “speak” the language of technology, using programmes and hardware to control movements and solve logic puzzles.
Environmental Engineering: Utilising our local environment to understand sustainability and how we can engineer a greener future.
Scientific Inquiry: Developing a sense of wonder through experiments that test hypotheses and explore the physical and biological world.
Digital Construction: Using digital tools to design and create, moving from being passive consumers of technology to active creators.
Just as in our Literacy and Numeracy programmes, our STEM instruction is highly differentiated. During our specialist release sessions, students work in collaborative small groups tailored to their experience levels.
Scaffolded Projects: For those new to a concept, we provide clear frameworks to ensure success.
Open-Ended Challenges: For our advanced thinkers and innovators, we provide complex, “low-floor, high-ceiling” challenges that allow for limitless extension and sophisticated engineering.
