At Howick Primary School, we believe that literacy is the foundation of all learning. Our approach is grounded in the Science of Reading, ensuring that every student—from our new entrants to our Year 6 leaders—receives the evidence-based instruction they need to become fluent readers and expressive writers.

A Differentiated, Small-Group Approach

A core feature of our classrooms is our commitment to differentiated teaching and learning. We recognise that every child’s literacy journey is unique. To meet these individual needs, our teachers deliver instruction through targeted small-group learning.

This approach allows our expert teachers to:

Our Structured Literacy Foundation

In tandem with our small-group focus, we utilise a Structured Literacy model that is explicit, systematic, and cumulative. By teaching the “code” of the English language, we empower our students to decode unfamiliar words with confidence.

• Phonological Awareness: Tuning ears to the sounds within our language.

• Explicit Phonics: Learning the relationship between letters and sounds in a logical sequence.

• Decodable Texts: Early readers use books that match their phonics knowledge, ensuring they experience success every time they open a book.

Developing Master Writers: The Writer’s Toolbox (Years 4–6)

As our students move into the senior years, we shift from “learning to write” to “writing for impact.” In Years 4–6, we utilise The Writer’s Toolbox, a world-class composition programme.

This tool helps our senior students master the craft of writing through:

• Sentence Styles: Moving beyond simple sentences to master complex structures that engage the reader.

• Immediate Feedback: Using the online platform to get real-time feedback on their writing quality and variety.

• Creative Confidence: Breaking down the “blank page” barrier with clear strategies for narratives, persuasive essays, and reports.

Comprehensive Support & Inclusion

We believe that every child can succeed in literacy with the right support. Our school structure is designed to identify and support students who require a different pace or specialised assistance.

The Role of our Learning Support Coordinator (LSC)

Our Learning Support Coordinator (LSC) is a dedicated resource who works across all year levels. The LSC works closely with teachers and whānau to:

• Identify Needs Early: Using diagnostic data to spot learning differences, such as dyslexia.

• Coordinate Support: Managing small-group interventions that mirror our classroom instruction but at a more intensive pace.

• Specialist Liaison: Connecting families with external specialists, such as Speech Language Therapists, when needed.

ESOL Support

For our students who speak English as a second language, we offer specialised ESOL support. These sessions help students build the vocabulary and cultural context they need to flourish in a New Zealand classroom environment.
